Gel Coating A Massive Catamaran Hull

The process of building our stunning catamaran, as showcased in the video, involves meticulous attention to detail. First, the mold had to be meticulously prepared by waxing, polishing, and restoring it. Once restored, it was ready to accept the white gel coat.

Understanding White Gel Coat

White gel coat is actually a colored resin that serves as the external and cosmetic surface for most boats found cruising on water bodies worldwide. It is sprayed onto the mold and catalyzed at around 1.5%, allowing it to set hard while remaining slightly tacky. This state is crucial because it’s ready to accept the subsequent laminate of fiberglass reinforcement, which are applied next in the boat building process. The application of the gel coat forms the initial protective layer, enhancing both appearance and durability.

The Gel Coat Application

The application of 170 kilos of white gel coat to the catamaran hull was a meticulous task, requiring around seven hours of dedicated work. This stage is fundamental as it ensures a seamless finish and protects the boat’s inner structure from water damage and external factors such as UV rays. It requires patience, skill, and precision to ensure an even distribution over the entire surface of the mold, ensuring that every area receives adequate coverage for protection. The gel coat must be spread uniformly with minimal air bubbles or uneven patches.
