The Refit Isn't Actually Finished

Back on board Elixir after a hectic few weeks.

We'd sailed all around Fiji running charters on a big Oyster and made a bit of cash, which was good.
Now it was finally time to go sailing again and test all these new systems, because we arrived in Fiji
and went straight to work without ever getting the chance to anchor up and try any of it.

Honestly, when we left New Zealand I'd say we were about 80% finished, so there was still significant
work to do. We piled everything on and left, and then it was such a rough trip that we noticed loads of
other things needing attention. So before we really got stuck into the circumnavigation, it was going to
be a slow period getting every system up to 100% and finishing this refit as best we could.

That’s Just Sailing

It's just problem solving, isn't it? Rachel said she hadn't been that afraid in a while. I was telling everyone it was all fine while she was up on the bow in a whirlpool, two or three foot waves, the boat spinning in circles, rocks and cold water all around us. Putting the sails up...

We Sailed In With No Engine

Somehow we survived that little ordeal. The engine cut out in the worst possible place, right in the middle of a tidal race. We hadn't figured out why yet, but it was probably a fuel issue. Thankfully there was just enough wind to sail into this nice little anchorage at Friday Harbor, the mai...

We Lost the Engine in a Tidal Race

Rule number one of sailing - Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong (and it will go wrong at the worst possible time). We lost the engine onboard @nick_adrift ’s Dufour 31 in a violent tidal race! Thankfully, the boat sails very well, and we managed to sail ourselves to safety. #sailaroundthewo...

Sailing Straight Into a Tidal Race

The hardest thing to get our heads around out here is how the tides work. There are so many headlands and islands that the water just moves in strange ways. We thought we were arriving around slack water, since high tide was only an hour away, and instead there were tidal races everywhere. Surroun...
