Before setting off on our Atlantic crossing from St. Thomas to Bermuda, we put our safety gear to the test with a real man overboard drill. In this clip, I jump into the ocean wearing my personal flotation device (PFD) to see what it actually feels like in the water and to practice an emergency recovery scenario. Offshore passagemaking requires more than just good equipment—it requires knowing how to use it when it matters. This is a behind-the-scenes look at some of the safety preparations we completed before heading 1,500 miles out to sea aboard our Kadey Krogen trawler, MOONFLEET, with our dog Gypsy along for the adventure. 🌊🛟🐾

After months of island hopping through the Caribbean aboard our Kadey Krogen trawler, the moment has finally arrived… we begin our Atlantic crossing from St Thomas to Bermuda, then to the Azores and Portugal with our dog Gypsy onboard.
In this episode of Unanchored Life, we prepare for one of the biggest adventures of our lives: a multi-day offshore passage across the Atlantic Ocean. The first leg; St Thomas, USVI to Bermuda will take us five days. From provisioning the boat and fueling up, to safety drills, emergency prep, and final goodbyes to friends, this is the reality of getting ready for long-distance passagemaking.
We practice man overboard drills, test our PFDs in open water (including me jumping overboard!)!
