Sailing in Fog: Lessons Learned from The Foster Journey

Leaving the Anchor at 5 AM
The Fosters left their anchor at 5 AM in pitch-black and wet conditions, making it feel like it was raining. The fog was so thick that it limited their visibility to almost nothing.

While sailing in the fog, they made contact with another ship via radio. Although the other boat couldn’t see them on radar, The Fosters were able to provide a reference point – a buoy they had recently passed. This interaction highlights the importance of communication while navigating in dangerous conditions.

The Fosters discovered that using the wind angle and observing the waves coming toward their starboard side could serve as their zone of reference when all other visual references were hidden by the fog. This adaptation demonstrates the value of flexibility in difficult sailing situations.
