Hey guys,
This episode is one that’s close to the heart and therefore took us quite a while to decide whether or not to post. We made a pact at the beginning of our journey to share with you, our loyal subscribers, the good, the bad and the ugly. In this episode you’ll see that it’s not all plain sailing (pun totally intended) as we share with you a very important learning curve. We sincerely hope that by sharing this, others might benefit in the future.
Below is our decision making process in an emergency but the most important thing to remember is communication of those onboard. We learned a lot about being ‘brave’ and also recognising the seriousness of an issue.
Stage 1:
At home – “I’d call a doctor in the morning”
Offshore – continue sailing and seek medical advice when we arrive.
Stage 2:
At home – “I’m driving myself to the hospital”
Offshore – sail for nearest land and hospital
Stage 3:
At home – “I need to call an ambulance”
Offshore – mayday mayday. We need outside help as we can’t deal with the emergency ourselves.
This experience made us think about the above step by step process and we’ll definitely follow this in the future. It may not suit other sailors, and that’s absolutely fine, but if it raises a question or kick-starts a conversation with other cruising couples then we’ve done our bit to help!
On a lighter note, in true Hayley style she never stops smiling and giving off her amazing energy. We actually had a good sail, reached our top speed ever of 17kts (albeit down a big wave!) and arrived in Las Palmas safely.
