📍 Isla Mejía & Refugio
Isla Ángel de la Guarda, Sea of Cortez, Baja California, Mexico 🇲🇽
After an incredible stay at Isla Mejía, we thought we'd squeeze in one more spearfishing trip before moving on. Instead, a shot at a giant snapper turned into an underwater recovery mission after one of our spears became hopelessly wedged in the rocks.
Back aboard Cosmo, our projects were just getting started. Our friends noticed something we hadn't: our mast wasn't tuned correctly. What followed was a deep dive into standing rigging as we adjusted the shrouds and corrected yet another issue left behind by a previous repair.
With strong winds on the way, we moved around the corner to Refugio, only to discover that one of our navigation charts showed us anchored directly on top of a submerged obstruction. Armed with a dinghy and a depth sounder, we set out after dark to figure out whether we needed to move... or whether the chart was simply wrong.
Just when we thought the excitement was over, our refrigerator quit. In one of the most remote places we've cruised, we worked through every troubleshooting step we could before finding a temporary fix that would get us back to civilization.
We wrap up an unforgettable summer in the northern Sea of Cortez with one last beach gathering alongside friends before our cruising plans begin to take us in different directions.
