Hey, welcome aboard ⚓️
We’ve got a huge chapter to share with you. This episode was edited and re-edited to keep it tight, but we wanted to be brutally honest about the ups, the downs, and the behind-the-scenes reality of buying a boat in another country - unseen, and often unpredictable.
To catch you up…
We flew to Thailand to inspect a 2009 Leopard 40 but walked away knowing she wasn’t our future floating home. Back in the hotel room, slightly deflated, we pulled out our shortlist and kept coming back to one boat we’d been quietly watching - a 2020 Leopard 40, Wahican, sitting in the British Virgin Islands.
What followed was a total whirlwind. We didn’t capture much of it on camera, but we put in a hopeful (and slightly cheeky 😅) offer on Wahican, and were over the moon when it was accepted! With our wedding coming up before settlement, and the flight from Perth to the Caribbean costing $4k US, we went ahead and paid the deposit - sight unseen! SO, we scrutinised every photo, poured over the interactive video, ran everything past our boat mentor, and scheduled a comprehensive survey, just to make sure she was as perfect as she looked.
Turns out Wahican was in mint condition. Lightly chartered during COVID, lovingly enjoyed by her owner after, and now… somehow, miraculously, ours. We’re still pinching ourselves.
They say you’re never given more than you can handle… but we had a lot on our plate: selling a house, buying a boat, getting married, moving to the other side of the planet… and just to add to the drama, three days before we were due to fly, I got a major health warning - Atrial Fibrillation reared its annoying head again. Suddenly, this dream adventure teetered on the edge. Flying halfway across the world is one thing, but facing a serious medical issue right before it? That’s a whole new level of chaos. It was scary. It was real. And it almost put everything on hold.
This episode weaves in so much life: moving, getting married, navigating the AF scare, tying up business loose ends, and finally landing in the Caribbean. It’s emotional, it’s exciting, and it’s very, very real.
Thanks for being here — truly 🤍 xx
