Heya, we’re Cozzy and Mitcho, thanks for joining us on our Sailing Ocean Life as we explore the magical and mystical Indonesia.
Sailing Ocean Life provides a fantastic opportunity to explore the world, and whilst it isn’t exempt from its fair share of challenges, what makes this experience truly special is the chance it offers to connect and share our lives with remarkable individuals, even if only for a brief moment. Pasar Wajo in Buton was a perfect example of this, as we immersed ourselves in the rich traditions and cultures of this enchanting location.
In this episode, we explore the island, although nowhere near enough, to discover an underwater freshwater cave and totally indulge in the spectacle that is Pakande-Kandea. Originally established as a form of thanksgiving, this tradition evolved into a ceremonial welcome for soldiers returning from the battlefield, but today, it remains a significant ritual to welcome guests to Buton.
And, beyond the communal feasting, this tradition incorporates elements of entertainment and ritual, encompassing social, political, and cultural interactions. The tradition symbolizes the mystical and social unity of the community, introducing ancestral spirits into their midst while embodying cultural values.
Celebrating traditions with these warm, welcoming people allowed us a deeper connection and an understanding of their culture, and of course, we all loved the delicious, plentiful food.
Next week we set sail to a stunning ocean Atol called Taka Lamungan.
We’d like to give credit to Nesto Wabula who created the stunning introduction to Buton video shown in this episode. Nesto was our driver who took us to pick up Lynnie, and he has since become a valued friend. He is available to drive you anywhere you need to go in the Buton Region, leave a comment below if you’d like his contact details, or look him up on Instagram @ www.instagram.com/nestowabula/
