Just when we thought we were finally free to start our Caribbean sailing adventure… bureaucracy had other plans.
After flying all the way from Australia to pick up our boat Salty Days, we suddenly found ourselves stuck in Sint Maarten when our Australian boat registration wasn’t processed in time. The result? Our boat was effectively impounded. We could leave the island… but our home couldn’t move an inch.
With no sailing, no changing anchorages, and no clearing out until our provisional registration arrives, we’re forced to shift gears and tackle the mountain of paperwork needed to get our Aussie rego approved.
While we wait, we dive into life in Sint Maarten — exploring the island’s fascinating French and Dutch history, watching the legendary low-flying planes at Maho Beach, and discovering the massive Simpson Bay Lagoon where superyachts and cruisers from around the world gather.
But being stuck also reveals something else about Salty Days. As an ex-charter Leopard 40 catamaran, she came beautifully maintained… but not exactly set up for long-term liveaboard life. Minimal solar, no inverter, no spare parts, and completely empty cupboards mean we’ve got a lot of work to do before we can truly call this boat home.
Then finally, the email arrives.
Our provisional Australian registration lands in our inbox and we’re cleared to move again. Freedom is just around the corner as we head toward Philipsburg — the buzzing heart of Sint Maarten.
But as we’re about to discover… even paradise can throw a curveball.
