Just when our Caribbean sailing adventure was meant to kick off… everything flipped on its head.

I flew to the Caribbean 3 days after my heart kicked into atrial fibrillation (AF), but a few weeks after arriving my symptoms ramped up, dizziness, light‑headedness, shortness of breath… the kind of stuff you can’t just shrug off when you’re thousands of miles from home. 😬

We’d heard from the Border Patrol Manager (yep, of all people) that his dad had a cardioversion done at the Sint Maarten Dutch Hospital, so we figured we’d check it out. But after being looked over by the incredible team there, we were suddenly staring down a tough call… keep going with treatment in the Caribbean or make the massive trek back to Australia for the follow‑up care I needed. 🇦🇺✈️

And from there on in, things moved very fast.

One minutes, I'm getting looked after at Sint Maarten Medical Centre and before we knew it, we’d shifted back to Simpson Bay, cleared immigration so I could legally leave, and I was boarding a flight bound for the other side of the planet.

Sailing the world isn’t always turquoise water and sunset cocktails, sometimes real life taps you on the shoulder in ways you never see coming. But moments like this remind us how bloody lucky we are to live this wild salty dream… and how important it is to look after your health along the way. ❤️
