Heya, we’re Cozzy and Mitcho. Thanks for joining us on our Sailing Ocean Life as we explore a village made on stilts.
Arriving at Palau Hoga we immediately notice the Sampela Village on Kaledupa Island. This unique fishing village spans 25ha, is home to about 1,800 sea gypsies, and is built entirely on stilts with a foundation made of mined coral.
The village gently sways with the breath of the ocean, but the community is like any other with a school, recreation zones for the kids, and shops selling daily provisions.
Bajau sea nomads are expert anglers, so they rely heavily on oceans encrusted with surrounding coral reefs. Still, some villagers daily traverse the passage to the mainland on dug-out canoes for land work duties.
Local folklore suggests that after fleeing from turmoil in surrounding countries the sea nomads arrived in the Wakatobi region seeking refuge. After discussions with local village elders, they were told they could establish their homes where, when thrown from land, a stone drops into the ocean, hence the proximity of this fascinating stilt village.
Historians have traced the Bajau tribe back to the 1500s, starting their lives on dugout teak houseboats, but more recently they have traded the floating gypsy life for a more sedentary existence on their stilt houses.
Thanks so much for coming aboard on our Indonesia adventures, thank you, we appreciate you sticking around. It’s always more fun having you here!
