Diving, boat crashing, Mexican hospitals… This is a crazy episode… Melissa and me sail to Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, & Punta Allen, MX. I throw a knife through his hand opening a coconut. We realize how expensive it is in the tourist islands, visit the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza, get a warning from the sea patrol, dive the beautiful waters of Cancun, and unfortunately run the boat up on the rocks… 🙁
We say goodbye to the lovely Melissa, she’s off to be a bicycle tour guide in Europe (I know, awesome), and we re-welcome Angela for some diving fun in Mexico.

We Refit the Boat for our Atlantic Crossing

Before crossing the Atlantic, we refit the whole boat: new bimini, repaired dodger, fresh lines, new autopilot. Problems still came, but they were small because the work was done. 📗 Get My Book: https://bethecaptain.com

The Best Thing You Can Do at Anchorages

Drop anchor, then go introduce yourself to the cruisers and the locals, and take them sailing. Plenty of people near a busy anchorage have never set foot on a yacht. Open that door and it comes back tenfold. 📗 Get My Book: https://bethecaptain.com

Stay Out of the Dangerous Quadrant

Northern Hemisphere storms spin counterclockwise, and the front right quadrant is the worst of it, where forward motion stacks on spin to build the biggest seas. It doesn't take a named hurricane, just a big low. Know where that corner sits and stay out of...

He Nearly Died on His First Passage

Jani was twenty and brand new to sailing when he signed on to cross the Atlantic. The captain bragged he didn't need weather routing. They sailed straight into Tropical Storm Alex. The red flags were there before they left the dock. 📗 Get My Book: http...

The Sail Was in Tatters…

One reef in the main was the right call. Then the wind climbed past fifty knots and the captain wouldn't send anyone out to do more. Wrong call - the overpowered boat fought to broach until the sail blew apart. 📗 Get My Book: https://bethecaptain.com
