In 1989, four men sailed out of New Zealand aboard the Rose-Noëlle — a trimaran one man had spent 19 years building by hand, and named after a woman who had already been dead for 16 years. Four days out, she flipped upside down in the Southern Ocean. What happened next is one of the greatest survival stories the sea has ever kept: 119 days adrift, given up for dead, mourned and buried by an entire country… and then accused of making the whole thing up.
This is the real story, not the Hollywood one. When I set out to tell it, the captain himself, John Glennie, now 85 and living in New Zealand, reached out to me. He shared his letters, his newspaper clippings, and his unpublished memoir — and most of what you'll hear has never been published anywhere. It's muddier, uglier, and more human than the legend. And it's exactly how it happened.
If this one stays with you, that's just the sea doing what it does. Thanks for being here.
