Our Biggest Ever Upgrade | Sailing Florence Refit Ep.179

Introduction to the Biggest Ever Upgrade on Sailboat Florence

November 15, 2021Matt and Amy.

Sailing Yacht Florence has been around the world on their 37t sailboat Florence for over 50,000 nautical miles. In this video, they reveal the biggest ever upgrade they made to their power system during their live aboard boat refit journey in preparation for more remote anchorages and watersports.

Solar Panels, Batteries, Fridges, and Instrument Upgrades

November 15, 2021Matt and Amy.

Sailing Yacht Florence started by replacing their old lead-acid batteries with high-powered lithium-ion batteries from Mastervolt, the mli Ultras. These have 230 amp lithium batteries that can store almost double the usable capacity and power compared to their old wet cell lead acid batteries.

The Challenge of Fitting in New Components

November 15, 2021Matt and Amy.

The next step in this boat refit was the installation of new lithium batteries which came with challenges such as having limited space on an old 37t sailboat from the 1980s. The team had to remove support structures for old batteries and build new boxes to house the new ones.

Power Systems Upgrades: Fusing, Cabling & Instruments

November 15, 2021Matt and Amy.

To ensure safety and efficient operation of their upgraded power system on Florence, the team focused on fusing, wiring with large cables to reduce voltage drop, hydraulic crimping tools, and a new autopilot controller.

Instrument Panel Redesign & Spade Anchor Upgrade

November 15, 2021Matt and Amy.

The sailboat refit process also involved changing the entire main instruments panel and switch panel by switching from fuses to using breakers. The team redesigned their instrument panels using NEMA 2000, improving the wiring’s simplicity.

Upgrade of Anchors for Watersports & Offshore Adventures

November 15, 2021Matt and Amy.

Sailing Yacht Florence further upgraded their anchor system with a new stainless steel Spade Anchor from Spade Anchors, replacing the previously used galvanized version that needed regular regalvanizing.

Conclusion – Getting Ready for Watersports & Adventures

November 15, 2021Matt and Amy.

This upgrade marks a significant milestone in Sailing Yacht Florence’s live aboard journey. The new lithium-ion batteries, instrument panel redesigns, upgraded anchors, and improved power systems have prepared the boat for watersports adventures and offshore exploration.
