SAILING TO FIJI – SwT 164 – From the last island in Polynesia to the first island in Melanesia

Leaving the beautiful Kingdom of Tonga behind and setting sails towards Fiji. Not only new adventures ahead, it’s a new group of islands, people, and culture. I am now leaving Polynesia as Tonga is the last island in the Polynesian chain, still sharing the continent with Fiji which is Oceania. What separates Fiji from Polynesia in general and even Tonga thats their neighbour is that this group of islands is in Melanesia. The people here are different and also have a huge influence on the culture of India. It’s sad to be on a schedule and feeling the rush to leave this amazing group of islands. But it’s getting close to cyclone season and I still have a long sail to safety. Tonga is in many ways the crossroad for sailors. Those who are going to New Zealand often have this as their last stop before reaching their final destination. And many of the boats going to Australia are pointing southwest to New Caledonia. Only a handful of sailors continue to Fiji every year, and from Fiji and beyond is even more exclusive. I’m sharing some of my philosophic thoughts about this as part of what I am reflecting on on my way to Fiji. Knowing that many of the “see you later” now might be quite a long time if we ever meet again. It’s a fact most sailboats end in New Zealand or Australia after crossing the Pacific. The number of people actually doing a full circle on a sailboat every year is less than the number of people reaching the top of Mount Everest. This knowledge makes me humble and also makes me think about my onward journey and adventure.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever we have time for it.

Even though this is season 6 on YouTube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean prior to, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.

PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I’m just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don’t have the blueprint either. I’m not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don’t think I can learn new things I should go ashore.
