LEAVING INDONESIA IN A HURRY – SwT 182 – THE REAL CHALLENGES OF SAILING SOUTH EAST ASIA

In this episode, I’m sharing some of the biggest challenges sailing in Indonesia. Once again, I’m blown away by the kindness from the people here and I’m wrapping up my things before leaving, even managing to help some new friends with their rigging.

The Challenges of Sailing Around Southeast Asia

I have the pleasure of meeting the lovely Thomas who has already helped us out, probably more than anyone else. I suspect we wouldn’t have made it to Bali without his help and guidance. He gave me what I think might be a bit like VIP service. I suspect they even had an immigration office open just for me on a Sunday.

Navigating Remote Fishing Boat Waters

In the middle of all this, I still have to leave my yacht unattended safely. This becomes even more difficult in Indonesia due to its vast size and remote locations with limited AIS (Automatic Identification System).

Cyclone Formations in Southeast Asia

The clock is ticking, and there are cyclones forming dangerously close to my destination. This causes significant concern for both the safety of my journey and having enough time to prepare.

A Rapid Departure from Indonesia

In this episode, you will witness one of the most stressful departures in my history as I face bad weather and try to avoid dangerous cyclone formations. Despite knowing what’s waiting, I have a strategy and plan for the execution.

Kindness from Indonesian Locals

I fall in love with the culture and kindness of the people in Indonesia. It’s a place that has surprised me in so many ways, and my local friends even help me to leave as fast as possible.

Sailing Southeast Asia with Thomas

In this episode, I share some of the big challenges sailing in Indonesia. The kindness shown by the people here amazes me as well.

Taking Thomas was nice enough to come and help us with our rigging after our Bob stay snapped. We hadn’t tuned the rigging at all, but Thomas did in his 40 years of sailing. Four decades of sailing, he’s definitely lent us a hand, and we’re very grateful for him.

Saying goodbye to such friendly people is one of the hardest parts of sailing but as I always say – see you later isn’t a goodbye. We often cross paths again in the future.

Rapid Visa Runs and Pressures in Indonesia

I don’t have time to hang around anymore, as my stitching isn’t pretty anymore, and I am under serious pressure from the tight visa situations.

The Final Departure

In this episode, we witness a rapid departure as my local friends help me clean up and get ready to leave as fast as possible. We then sail through the beautiful Indonesia while facing challenges along the way.

This has been one of the most challenging episodes yet, with a mix of weather conditions and limited time which adds an element of urgency. I’m truly grateful to have made it through so far!

The Beauty of Southeast Asia Sailing

Sailing in Southeast Asia has its beauty and challenges, but the kindness from the locals and incredible landscapes make it all worthwhile. It’s not easy, but that’s part of what makes sailing such a rewarding adventure.

I have learned a lot from my journey in Indonesia, particularly when it comes to challenges and navigating remote areas. Despite these obstacles, the warmth and kindness shown by the people here make this trip even more special.

I will always treasure these memories of sailing through Southeast Asia. Remember to keep exploring and don’t miss any parts of my journey!

In this episode Im wrapping up things in Tual making ready to sail towards Timor Este. My visa is again expiring and the crazy weather situations here is not good news for me. I have never ever felt so stressed before, being in such remote place and having so much to fix in such limited time. My amazing indonesian friends are helping me cleaning my hull and the Immigration office in Tual are giving me the VIP service helping me to clear out on a sunday. Just as much as I have fall in love with the culture and the people of Indonesia its also a dark side to it all, Its super challenging to be a sailor here, at least at the more remote corners of this amazing nation. I meet Phil and Molly that has just bought a yacht in Darwin and have just started on their sailing adventure. Their bobstay snapped on the way to Tual, and was in a need of some tuning and check of the rigging after having the bobstay welded. I was happy to help and offcourse with the limited tools and resources did our best to make sure they could continue their sailing as safe as possible. With this weathers in this region the rigging needs to be in a perfect condition. Otherwise you will be in for some surprices. Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser mostly solo, making videos whenever we have time for it. Comfortable at sea with 4 decades of sailing experience and hundreds of thousands of miles behind me. Even though this is season 6 on YouTube I did not make that many videos in the beginning, and obviously not from my entire sailing life. Before full-time sailing 6 years ago, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing and racing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
