We Visit An Active Volcano | Sailing with Six | Ep 31

In this episode we get to experience a once in a lifetime moment with the mighty Mt. Yasur on the island of Tanna, Vanuatu. Visiting a volcano has always been something we hoped to achieve and while we were anchored at Port Resolution the weather cleared and presented the opportunity to do just that.

It was an experience right from the start with a ride in the back of a ute all the way to the cultural centre at the base of the mountain, followed by a welcome ceremony by the village who live near by, then another ride up to the top of the volcano. We then walked to the very top to stare down into the crater and watch lava shooting out and landing on the sides. It truly was an assault on the senses as the eruptions made a thunderous sound which was felt through your entire body and sometimes caused your ears to pop with the change in pressure. The visual experience of seeing into the depths of the earth where the lava was boiling away, then turning to see the moon rising on one side and the sun setting on the other horizon was sensational. As we were guided to the furtherest viewing point we were hit by ash clouds and the sulphur smell and if we braved a moment to crack our eyes open slightly we could see the deep red and orange glow and feel the heat from the volcano.

What an amazing experience, maybe one day we will do it again but for now we can re-live the moment through this video and share it with you. Enjoy!
