Atlantic to Pacific Panama Canal Transit With A Night On Lake Gatun

Atlantic to Pacific: A Family’s Exciting Panama Canal Transit

In the latest episode of ‘Sailing with Six,’ a family embarks on an extraordinary sailing adventure, navigating through the iconic Panama Canal. The video showcases their incredible journey from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, filled with challenges and excitement.

Having prepared ‘Happy Days’ for their trans-Pacific crossing, this adventurous young family eagerly anticipated moving up in the transit list to expedite their canal passage. Originally scheduled for a two-day transit, they were fortunate enough to secure an earlier slot for their sailing adventure through the Panama Canal.

Thrilling Canal Experience

Commencing their Panama Canal sailing adventure, they entered their first lock of the canal system. Their exhilaration was evident as they were reminded that Upon reaching Linton Bay, awaiting news of a last-minute cancellation that could allow them to proceed with an accelerated transit, the family’s excitement was palpable. Upon receiving word of their spot in the lineup for canal passage, they enthusiastically set out on their shortened 23-nautical-mile journey to Shelter Bay.

Their preparation involved picking up longer lines and big fenders needed specifically for the canal transit. This efficient setup proved invaluable as they prepared themselves mentally and physically for what lay ahead.

A Memorable Experience

Commencing their Panama Canal sailing adventure, they entered their first lock of the canal system. Their exhilaration was evident as they were reminded that
This is our second time navigating this manmade shortcut, but this journey takes us from the mighty Atlantic Ocean to the vast Pacific. Our two-day transit includes a random night spent on a giant mooring on Lake Gatun, a pitstop in the middle of the jungle.

By canal regulations, we need a crew of 4 line handlers over 18 to assist us (captain not included). Joining us for this adventure are João and Ana, fellow travellers we met at Shelter Bay Marina, and Oodie, a friendly Panamanian local with over 100 canal transits under his belt. His expertise proves invaluable as we navigate the locks and experience the wonders of this engineering feat. With Shona (mum) as the fourth person we team up the kids to get their invaluable assistance.

Get ready for sweaty moments, tour boat surprise, and a glimpse into the unique camaraderie that forms between crewmates during a canal crossing. Don't miss this unforgettable catamaran journey through the heart of Panama!
