Navigating offshore on Day 31 of his solo non-stop voyage around the world aboard SV Phoenix do Mar, Oliver Widger from Sailing With Phoenix welcomed an unexpected avian visitor. While monitoring ocean conditions, Oliver observed a seabird trailing the vessel across open water for several hours before it decided to touch down directly on deck.
The visiting seabird settled comfortably aboard, remaining completely calm and unbothered by Oliver’s nearby movements. Reflecting on traditional maritime folklore during the encounter, Oliver remarked that “seabirds are believed to be sailors that died at sea”, finding deep personal comfort in the animal’s calm arrival during an otherwise demanding passage.
The arrival provided timely morale for the solo skipper during an arduous stretch of his circumnavigation. Reflecting candidly on the emotional weight of solitary passage-making, Oliver admitted that “To be honest, this day was kind of a miserable day”, acknowledging that having a gentle creature rest beside him brought welcome warmth to the cockpit.
Although fresh sailing breeze began picking up across the water, adjusting sails or trimming lines threatened to startle the resting creature. Choosing patience over boat speed, Oliver held back his sailing tasks, humorously noting that “He’s preventing me from sailing” while telling his companion that “You can rest as long as you’d like”.
Oliver identified the weary traveler as a brown noddy, marveling at the chance meeting far from mainland shores. He let the precious wind slip past rather than disturb his guest, grateful for the shared offshore hours before resuming his route across the ocean.
A brown noddy landed on the boat to rest and stayed alongside Oliver for hours during Day 31.
Oliver shared a traditional belief that seabirds represent sailors who died at sea, offering comforting companionship during a difficult day.
