Gathering before an international audience of bluewater sailors and naval architects at the Quantum Sails loft in Annapolis, Maryland, Brian Trautman and Karin (Kazza) of Sailing SV Delos delivered an exhaustive technical retrospective chronicling two and a half years of custom yacht construction. Hosted by Quantum Sails Chief Commercial Officer Dave Gandell during the United States Sailboat Show, the presentation traced the evolution of Delos 2.0 from initial design sketches to an advanced 53-foot aluminum expedition catamaran taking shape in New Zealand.
Having logged more than 85,000 nautical miles circumnavigating the globe aboard their original Amel Super Maramu 53 ketch, the Delos crew brought decades of hard-won offshore experience into their next-generation build. Rather than purchasing a production composite vessel, the team committed to designing a bespoke expedition platform engineered specifically for high-latitude ice exploration, tropical autonomy, and global passage-making.
The core structural philosophy of Delos 2.0 centers on 5083-H116 marine-grade aluminum alloy, selected for its superior strength-to-weight ratio, fatigue resistance, and impact tolerance against floating logs or sea ice. Brian highlighted how digital naval architecture models were translated into hundreds of precision CNC-plasma-cut aluminum plates delivered directly to their Auckland shipyard.
Key structural engineering decisions reviewed during the keynote include:
Self-sufficiency at sea relies heavily on robust electrical architecture. Brian outlined the vessel’s primary DC bus design, developed in close coordination with specialized marine electrical engineers. Engineered to power heavy induction galley loads, watermakers, and electronic navigation suites without requiring a noisy auxiliary diesel generator, the system integrates a high-capacity lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery bank replenished by expansive solar arrays and high-output engine alternators.
Stringent electrical isolation was enforced throughout the build to protect the aluminum hull against stray-current galvanic corrosion. Every electrical circuit is strictly two-wire (floating ground), avoiding common-ground engine block returns and ensuring all wiring is routed through protective conduits with non-conductive glands.
Transitioning the discussion to living spaces, Karin shared the design journey of the catamaran’s central bridge deck salon and galley. Drawing from years of provisioning and cooking in heavy seas, the galley layout emphasizes secure bracing points, generous dry storage, and high-durability surfaces.
A major milestone highlighted during the presentation was the precision installation of the seamless Corian countertops. Fabricated to integrate marine fiddles and deep undermount sinks, the solid-surface counters brought visual warmth and domestic functionality to the industrial aluminum shell. Furthermore, Karin detailed the multi-layered insulation strategy—combining spray foam, thermal break barrier tapes, and acoustic headliners to eliminate interior condensation in cold climates.
As co-hosts of the evening, Quantum Sails experts and Brian outlined the custom sail inventory tailored for Delos 2.0. Because the vessel is designed for two-handed offshore operation, the sailplan balances high-performance power with manageable handling lines led aft to sheltered helm stations.
The sail inventory includes a high-aspect square-top mainsail for enhanced light-wind drive, a rugged self-tacking working jib on an electric furler for effortless short-tacking, a masthead Code Zero for light reaching, and dedicated storm canvas built from high-modulus woven Dacron to endure southern ocean gales.
The foundational engineering and design specifications presented at Quantum Sails are summarized below:
| Design Parameter | Specification | Maritime & Expedition Role |
|---|---|---|
| Vessel Class | Custom 53-Foot Expedition Catamaran | Purpose-built for high-latitude, tropical, and global circumnavigation |
| Hull Material | 5083-H116 Marine Aluminum Alloy | Extreme structural impact resistance and structural rigidity in sea ice |
| Build Location | Auckland, New Zealand | World-renowned Southern Hemisphere custom aluminum boatbuilding hub |
| Presentation Venue | Quantum Sails Loft, Annapolis, MD | Live technical presentation during the Annapolis United States Sailboat Show |
| Electrical Architecture | Isolated LiFePO4 DC Bus with Solar Arch | Zero-generator off-grid living powering induction galley and watermaker |
| Corrosion Defense | Two-wire floating ground DC system | Complete galvanic isolation preventing hull stray-current electrolysis |
| Sailplan Partner | Quantum Sails | Square-top mainsail, self-tacking jib, Code Zero, and storm canvas |
The technical presentation was held live at the Quantum Sails loft in Annapolis, Maryland, during the Annapolis Sailboat Show.
Marine-grade 5083 aluminum provides extreme impact resistance against ice and floating debris, superior structural rigidity, and watertight integrity for high-latitude expedition voyaging.
The yacht incorporates a high-capacity lithium battery bank, heavy solar arch generation, and high-output engine alternators running a fully isolated DC system.
Partnered with Quantum Sails, the inventory features a square-top mainsail, a self-tacking furling jib, a masthead Code Zero, and heavy-weather storm canvas.
