Sailing Sitka heads off the beaten path to a European-styled town called Manzano. After enjoying the city vibes, they venture to explore less populated areas near Santiago Bay. Their destination is particularly special due to an old 300ft shipwreck.
The sunken marvel, a steel cargo ship named San Luiso, lies in waters just outside of Manzano. This historical vessel withstood over seven decades of operation from the early 20th century through World War II before meeting its fate in the late 1950s.
Sailing Sitka uncovers how San Luiso met its end. Struck by a submerged rock during a Category 5 hurricane in Santiago Bay, this former steam-powered ship from the golden era of deep-water maritime trade is now part of Mexico’s Pacific Coast history.
Rather than disappearing into the depths, San Luiso transformed into an underwater oasis for sea creatures. Over the years, its rusted hull has attracted diverse marine life to create a unique artificial reef that snorkelers like Jay and Kenna get to enjoy.
Navigating the murkiness posed a challenge but did little to deter these adventurous sailors. Despite the poor visibility, they made the most out of their exploration, appreciating what remains visible of the shipwreck’s interior.
Apart from exploring historical wonders, life aboard Sitka ensures comfort and enjoyment. Post their shipwreck exploration, Jay and Kenna indulged in a delicious meal of freshly made pasta with greens, accompanied by an exquisite bottle of Chilean wine.
The journey aboard Sitka is more than just sailing. It’s about uncovering stories from the past, living life to the fullest with good food and drinks, while being cautious of local wildlife. The exploration of San Luiso shipwreck was not only a testament to their adventurous spirit but also an educational voyage into Mexico’s maritime heritage.
