Boat Refit Journey Continues in AGA Verde

Our Season 2 sailing adventures have taken us further south, closer towards our dreams of exploring everywhere the sea touches. In Episode 112, we depart from AGA Verde on a passage to Puna Avisto and face some interesting challenges.

Windier Than Expected

As we begin our departure, the wind picked up more than anticipated. This led us to quickly realize that something wasn’t quite right with the main sail’s shape as I put in a reef. Upon further inspection, Jay discovered that he had placed the second reef on the incorrect end. We spent some time wrestling with the main, but were eventually able to get it sorted out and configure our sails for an optimal journey south.

Early Morning Mishap

We tried making coffee down below while sailing. It’s not easy when you’re rocking and rolling on short seas, but luckily our gimbaled table helped keep the cup from spilling too much! The sound of the shaft spinning signaled we were surfing down waves – an exciting experience as we sped along at 7+ knots with a reefed main and jib.

Fishing Frenzy

The fishing action was intense! Jay spotted the Mahi Mahi jump out of the water and we were thrilled at the prospect of enjoying this delicious fish for dinner. Although we’ve caught mostly skipjack tuna so far, this green ‘chicken of the sea’ was a welcome change.

Sitka’s Transformation

Since purchasing Sitka in 2016, Jay has undergone many upgrades and refits to make her ready for offshore sailing. Projects have included glassing over cockpit areas originally made of teak, creating new sail covers, adding cedar siding, and more. It’s incredible to think about all that she’s been through in pursuit of our nautical dreams.

Tackling Boat Projects

In a previous episode, we attempted drone footage during sailing with less than stellar results (the drone sank!). Undeterred, we’ve been getting creative. A boat hook fitted with a GoPro mount allowed us to capture unique shots as Sitka projects forward on her adventures.

Lessons Learned

My seasickness upon catching the Mahi Mahi was an opportunity to remind myself that sometimes rest is necessary when fatigue hits. In a moment of overconfidence, I skipped my motion sickness meds in favor of powering through – a decision that backfired rather dramatically.

Anchored in Puna Avisto

We successfully anchored in Puna Avisto, but the wind remained relentless. As we prepared dinner of rice and grilled Mahi Mahi (delicious!), we reflected on the challenges faced that day and felt grateful to have Sitka by our side on this offshore journey.
This 6 year boat refit got us here! We spent several years refitting Sitka to get her ocean worthy. We ripped teak decks off, built a hard top dodger, sewed stack packs, glassed cabin top sidings and a cockpit floor, installed a hydrovane, sewed cockpit cushions, got brand new sails, installed insulation and cedar planking in the stateroom/quarterberth... the list goes on. This is our back story and the story of how Sitka was made into the powerful and beautiful vessel she is now. Follow along for more as we take our 1976 Cheoylee Offshore 41 around the world!!!
