Passage Mode Activated! Leg 1 of our longest Sail of the Season
Welcome back to season 2 of Sailing Sitka, we’re Jay and Kenna two young Canadians who stepped outside the box of comfort and decided to act on our ambitions of sailing around the world. We first set sail from Victoria BC Canada and have been adventuring around Mexico ever since.
Preparing for a Sea of Cortez Crossing
In this season, we’ll be sailing further south and closer towards our dreams of exploring everywhere the sea touches. After 10 days of preparation in La Paz Mexico, the time has finally come for us to cross the Sea of Cortez to the mainland of Mexico.
The Journey Begins
With a new crew member, Warren, aboard, we’re ready to set off. We’ll first head to Peling, a 2-hour motor-sail away. From there, it’s on to Los Morros for a 9-hour sail and finally onto La Cruz, making for an approximately 55-60 hour sail in total.
Autopilot Troubleshooting
As we left the anchor, we encountered an issue with our autopilot. However, with some troubleshooting and assistance from Warren, the problem was resolved. The autopilot seemed to be holding up for the rest of our journey.
A Shore Excursion
After resolving the autopilot issue, we headed ashore to Peling for a brief visit. It was here that Warren shared some of his life experiences and advice with us.
The Passage to Los Morros
Prepared for the long sail ahead, we made our way from Peling to Los Morros. The first part of our journey involved some calm winds, and we took advantage by filming content and relaxing with the crew.
Fishing Success
During our sail, we managed to catch three skipjacks, which we let go as they weren’t intended for consumption. This marks the beginning of what promises to be a challenging yet rewarding journey across the Sea of Cortez.
A New Chapter
As we neared Los Morros, we prepared to drop anchor and rest before embarking on our 340 nautical mile crossing to La Cruz. With the autopilot fixed and a skilled crew ready for the challenges ahead, this journey marks an exciting new chapter in our sailing adventures.
