Welcome back to Season 2 of Sailing Sitka, where Jay and Kenna document their ambitious journey around the world. The young Canadian couple set sail from Victoria, BC, Canada and have been sailing across Mexico since, venturing ever further south in pursuit of their dreams.
In this episode, Jay and Kenna navigate a challenging start with an engine that fills up quickly due to a leak from their rudder shaft seal. They discovered the issue while anchored in the Sea of Cortez but assure their viewers not to worry. As safety is paramount, they’ve made the decision to leave Sitka on the hard chapas for this part of their journey rather than keep her in the water.
Setting off to transit into Barra de Navidad, they acknowledge the tricky entrance known for groundings. Following soundings on their Navionics and ensuring a rising tide, they make the journey carefully.
Once successfully inside the protected lagoon at Barra de Navidad, they are greeted by the tropical setting of dense forest and palm trees. They are also welcomed by friends already in the anchorage who invite them to try ‘Pares’, a traditional Mexican concoction that includes fresh milk from goats or cows, mixed with alcohol, chocolate, coffee, set on fire for sanitization.
A quest for fresh milk leads them into the small town, with friendly locals guiding them to both fresh supplies and a rare find – sushi of surprisingly high quality.
A highlight from this episode was trying the local drink ” ,”, an unconventional mix that had Jay and Kenna questioning their life choices but enjoying every sip!
By integrating a healthy respect for Mexico’s coastal challenges with the camaraderie of fellow sailors, and by embracing unique cultural experiences such as Pares, Jay and Kenna highlight what it truly means to #sailaroundtheworld.
