Sailing Sitka Episode 126 Recap: Leaving Barra Manzano & Exploring Shipwrecks
After two fantastic weeks at the beautiful port of Barra Manzano in Mexico, Canadian couple Jay and Kenna are ready to set sail for new adventures. Join them as they prepare for their journey south to Manzano, encounter an unexpected shipwreck en route, and explore the vibrant town upon arrival.Leaving Barra Manzano
After enjoying two wonderful weeks making new friends and indulging in delicious local cuisine, Jay and Kenna are ready to push further south. From their vantage point, the total distance to Manzano is approximately 27 nautical miles, which should take between 5-6 hours at an expected wind speed of 5-6 knots with progressively stronger winds as the day progresses. Although they’ve been anchored for a while, Barra has provided plenty of fun and relaxation.Encountering the Shipwreck
Upon starting their journey out of Barra Manzano, Jay and Kenna first spot a large shipwreck from a distance. As they get closer, they discover the remnants of what appears to be the bow of a freighter at the top of a nearby hill, leading down to the exposed wreck. Research reveals that on October 23rd, 2015, Hurricane Patricia pushed the ball carrier Los lentos onto these rocks, approximately 25 nautical miles from Manzano. With waves over 10 meters high, the ship was ultimately unable to handle the conditions and was left eroded in place.Exploring Vibrant Manzano
After an uneventful 5-hour journey, Jay and Kenna arrive at the busy and major port of Manzano, Mexico. As they approach their new anchorage, they are met with a mixture of excitement and awe at the bustling atmosphere. Despite the gloomy weather, the couple is filled with enthusiasm as they sail into their new destination.Enjoying Local Culture
Having made it safely to Manzano, Jay and Kenna decide to treat themselves to a Valentine’s Day dinner in town. They explore the vibrant local culture and scenery, comparing their surroundings to Greek landscapes with their unique topography. The couple also shares insights on sourcing groceries and supplies at an affordable price in the bustling port town.Exploring Hidden Gems
Throughout their stay, Jay and Kenna continue to discover hidden gems in and around Manzano. They even rent jetskis for a thrilling adventure before heading off on their next leg of the journey south. This episode also features drone footage capturing stunning aerial views of the surrounding landscape, showcasing just how beautiful this area truly is.Sailing Tips and Tricks
As usual, Episode 126 includes some helpful sailing tips shared by Jay and Kenna. One particular highlight is their advice on not getting too close to other boats at anchor, especially those with people living aboard. Although it may be tempting to perform daring maneuvers like donuts around anchored vessels, it’s best to avoid doing so in order to maintain comfort for all involved.Final Thoughts
