Why Our Main Sail got Stuck up the Mast (& how we fixed it)
July 27, 2024 by Sailing Ruby Rose | Language: EN Play Time: 00:01:00 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

While sailing on their yacht ‘Ruby Rose,’ a couple found themselves faced with a challenging scenario that can be every sailor’s nightmare: having their main sail stuck up the mast, 8 miles out to sea. This episode uncovers how they managed and ultimately resolved this issue.
Sail Stuck Up The Mast
As their sailing day proceeded, the couple attempted to lower their main sail for the day, only for it to get stuck about a foot down the mast. Panicking slightly, they tried easing off the mainsheet to see if that would help release the sail. However, when this proved unsuccessful and the situation remained critical, the last thing they wanted was to navigate into an anchorage with a sail that wouldn’t come down.
The Fix
Determined not to let this setback impede their journey, they took action. With the prospect of climbing up the mast daunting and potentially risky 8 miles from shore, especially in the dark, they decided to exert tension on the first batten line to see if drawing it down could free the sail. When this too failed, they persevered.
A Hard-Pulling Session
The sailor then went forward and began hauling with all their might on the sail. The persistence eventually paid off as something gave way, allowing the main sail to finally come down. It was at this point they discovered a problem with the second batten car, where the sail’s baton goes into the car, suggesting it was detached or possibly broken.
Concerns Over Repurposing
The couple recognized that unless the issue could be permanently fixed, rehoisting the sail could result in another frustrating jam. This situation underscored the importance of addressing and potentially replacing any compromised components proactively to avoid such mishaps.

Hey there! We're Nick and Terysa and we’ve become completely obsessed with the idea of sailing around the world and sharing our experiences and information through our sailing lifestyle videos with others.
We met travelling around India, and quickly agreed that rather than “settling down” and doing what most normal people do, we wanted to travel and have adventures! We moved onto our 38 foot monohull in 2014, sailed across the Atlantic twice, cruised the Caribbean, Bahamas and Europe, before buying a brand new 45 ft catamaran!
We hope you enjoy what we do. Please subscribe, like and share.
