Offshore Sailing Preparation – Overcoming Major Challenges

In this episode, we dive into the complexities of preparing for a 500-mile offshore sailing journey from Baya to Malaysia. With just 12 hours until departure, multiple issues arise that threaten to derail our plans. The Water Maker CrisisOur primary concern is the water maker, which remains nonfunctional despite a week and a half of repairs at Ocean Marina. In a last-ditch effort to fix the system, we identify a major bodge that has been holding the pressurized components together. As we test the water maker on our mini-checkout, an airlock causes it to malfunction once again. The Ice Machine BreakdownAdding to our woes is the failure of the ice machine, which has been inoperable for over a week. With scorching heat on its way, we can’t afford to delay our departure further as our crew anxiously awaits fresh supplies. The Urgent Need for an EPIRBIn light of the growing list of issues, we are grateful to have obtained a vital piece of safety equipment – an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB). This essential device will be invaluable in case of emergency during our 500-mile passage. The Struggle with BureaucracyAs we prepare to set sail, bureaucratic hurdles appear, demanding copies of boat registration, passports, and insurance for Malaysian clearance. Despite our best efforts, we find ourselves at the mercy of international red tape.Preparing for Departure Amid ChallengesDespite the setbacks and stress, we remain determined to tackle each issue head-on. As the final hours of preparation tick away, we remind ourselves that overcoming adversity is a crucial part of the sailing experience.Charting Our Course ForwardLooking ahead, our primary goal remains navigation to Malaysia. By identifying and addressing problems as they arise, we strive to overcome these challenges together.Stay tuned for future episodes, where we’ll share more details on cleaning the freshwater tanks, tackling electrical issues, and dealing with unforeseen obstacles in our offshore sailing journey.Join Our Journey to Malaysia and BeyondEmbark on this exhilarating 500-mile offshore passage with us as we sail from Baya to Malaysia. Hey there! We're Nick and Terysa and we’ve become completely obsessed with the idea of sailing around the world and sharing our experiences and information through our sailing lifestyle videos with others.

We met travelling around India, and quickly agreed that rather than “settling down” and doing what most normal people do, we wanted to travel and have adventures! We moved onto our 38 foot monohull in 2014, sailed across the Atlantic twice, cruised the Caribbean, Bahamas and Europe, before buying a brand new 45 ft catamaran!

We hope you enjoy what we do. Please subscribe, like and share.
