Keeping away from hazards in the Malacca Strait

Keeping away from hazards in the Malacca Strait

Welcome aboard as we continue our epic sailing journey along the infamous Malacca Strait. With over 200 miles still to travel until reaching Langkawi, we’ve faced some unique challenges so far.

Max Speed and Tide Affecting Performance

In our seven hours underway, we’ve reached a max speed of 12.3 knots, which we believe is due to the strong tide rippling through this area.

Weather Conditions in the Malacca Strait

The day has remained calm, warm and sunny without a single hint of disturbance on our glassy sea state – typical for this region.

Navigation Hazards in the Malacca Strait

Navigating this treacherous strait, we encountered these massive structures – a pair of light towers and one buoy that marks shallow waters offshore.

Cargo Ships in the Malacca Strait

We continue to be amazed and entertained by numerous cargo ships that traverse these waters, a constant reminder of the importance and activity in this crucial global waterway.

Sailing the Malacca Strait Safely

To keep ourselves and our vessel safe while sailing through this hazardous waterscape, we’ve adopted several safety practices. First and foremost is always maintaining situational awareness and vigilance in navigating the narrow strait dotted with shallow areas.

Furthermore, adhering to all nautical charts, buoyage systems, keeping an eye on traffic – both sailing boats like ours, and commercial ships that ply the waters here. Moreover, being cautious about weather patterns as they can quickly escalate conditions in the confined space of the Malacca Strait.

Next Steps for Our Journey

In conclusion, our journey continues, as we strive towards completing the remaining distance and reaching the paradise of Langkawi. As we move forward, our determination remains steadfast in embracing the challenges ahead while maintaining strict safety standards.

Hey there! We're Nick and Terysa and we’ve become completely obsessed with the idea of sailing around the world and sharing our experiences and information through our sailing lifestyle videos with others.

We met travelling around India, and quickly agreed that rather than “settling down” and doing what most normal people do, we wanted to travel and have adventures! We moved onto our 38 foot monohull in 2014, sailed across the Atlantic twice, cruised the Caribbean, Bahamas and Europe, before buying a brand new 45 ft catamaran!

We hope you enjoy what we do. Please subscribe, like and share.
