Ice Machine Blues on Sailing Ruby Rose 2
Sailing on Ruby Rose 2 from the beautiful Capus Island was truly a refreshing break for us. But as we were just anchored, we encountered an issue with our ice machine. One of the many components we had to fix while enjoying the picturesque surroundings.
The Issue
While relaxing on Capus Island, Nick was trying to fix various parts of our boat including the ice machine. Our main problem with the ice machine was the solenoid that appeared to be blocked but closes using a hot wire across the battery from our dingy. We simply wanted to get this cleaned out.
A DIY Solution
After manually electrically forcing the solenoid to open using the boat’s battery, it blew through a few times. This action helped dislodge anything in there, allowing us to see if it would function properly. Unfortunately, by the next morning, the ice machine was still not working again.
Water and Sediment
Couple of points about our experience – we discovered that there is a considerable amount of gritty matter in the water which causes the ice machine issues. The matter seems to be off-white, non-dissolvable, and inorganic with the consistency of very fine sand.
Temporary Fix
We used an innovative method where we collected water from the ice machine using bowls that created a vortex. This helped us collect sediment really quickly. We then took our freshwater deck wash hose, connected the water out to this hose and bled the system for about 5 minutes to flush it all out. Unfortunately, there was still sediment left in the water suggesting there might be plastic dust or quality issues with our water.
A Day on the Sea
We departed for Taman Island in anticipation of an overnight sail. The weather was quite promising as we anticipated some downwind sailing later on. But as we left, we couldn’t have anticipated that our sail to Taman would end up being rather slow with lumpy seas and a breeze of around 20 knots at times.
The Unexpected Adventure
At the time, we thought our sail to Taman would be a comfortable, slow trip downwind as forecasted. But instead, it became a much faster journey, sailing at around 8.5 – 9 knots while experiencing big lumpy seas. It certainly wasn’t what was planned, but with Ruby Rose 2 handling the conditions beautifully, we thoroughly enjoyed our fast sail despite the challenges.
Ahead to Taman Island
Looking ahead to exploring more of the stunning coastline around Taman Island, we now brace ourselves for what lies beyond and hope for smooth sailing.
Boat life is all about embracing the unpredictable, and that is exactly what happens in this week's episode. Join us as we sail down the coast of Malaysia, and we are in for a very unexpected ride!

Hey there! We're Nick and Terysa and we’ve become completely obsessed with the idea of sailing around the world and sharing our experiences and information through our sailing lifestyle videos with others.
We met travelling around India, and quickly agreed that rather than “settling down” and doing what most normal people do, we wanted to travel and have adventures! We moved onto our 38 foot monohull in 2014, sailed across the Atlantic twice, cruised the Caribbean, Bahamas and Europe, before buying a brand new 45 ft catamaran!
We hope you enjoy what we do. Please subscribe, like and share.
