Ep. 204 ~ We sailed our catamaran through the famous Corinth Canal… and somehow ended up passing directly under bungee jumpers mid-air 😳
In this episode, we leave the Ionian Sea and cross the Gulf of Corinth, passing under the impressive Rio–Antirrio Bridge before transiting one of the most iconic waterways in the Mediterranean.
If you’re planning this route, there are a few key things to know. You’ll need to contact bridge control on VHF before passing under the Rio–Antirrio Bridge—they’ll give you clearance and tell you which span to use based on your mast height. Later, you’ll check in with Corinth Canal control (VHF Ch. 11) to receive your transit instructions and timing.
We also share what it’s really like to cross the canal by sailboat—costs, speed limits, traffic control, and whether it’s worth it… or if you should sail the long way around the Peloponnese instead.
Along the way, we stop at two great anchorages for sailors:
Missolonghi anchorage – a well-protected spot with easy access to town, but a narrow, shallow channel on approach Galaxidi harbor – a beautiful, welcoming town with stern-to docking and a strong sailing community
Getting there wasn’t exactly smooth (think washing machine conditions 🤢), but the canal itself? Absolutely unforgettable—and a must-do for anyone sailing Greece.
