The WILD INDIAN OCEAN – Is this what is to come? Ep 361

Episode 361 – The Wild Indian Ocean Journey Begins

In our previous episode, we sailed an impressive 300 nautical miles from Malaysia to Sang Indonesia. Upon arrival, however, our engine troubles started. We found that the filters were clogged and needed changing, while the starter motor was removed and repaired.
With these problems solved and hopes for smooth sailing ahead, we began the challenging 600 nautical mile sail to Padang, anticipating more high seas adventures.

The Sails Are Set and Hydran Adjustments Commence

As we set our sails with a wind forward of the beam, sailing at around 5 to 6 knots with a full head sail and hydran on point, it became evident that some adjustments would need to be made as we encountered strong gusts. It seemed like Nandji 2 was a larger boat, requiring more time to adapt and learn how to manage her effectively.
Despite these challenges, the team embraced the opportunity for growth and honed their skills with every new sea state and wind direction they faced. Adjustments were made, allowing for better handling of the sails as we continued on our journey.

Navigating the Cut: A Key Passage in Our Journey

As we sailed closer to the Indonesian islands, we knew that navigating through the narrow and sometimes treacherous Cut was a necessary challenge. With only enough daylight left for a safe passage during slack tide, we timed our approach perfectly to make it through without issue. As night fell and the first leg of the 50 nautical mile journey concluded, we set anchor and prepared ourselves for another long sail.

Adventure Awaits: Preparing for the North Northern Islands

As we prepared to embark on the next portion of our journey from Sang to the northern islands of West Sumatra, we knew that a thorough understanding of local weather patterns and currents was crucial. With just under 200 nautical miles from our previous anchorage at Pulau Raya, we studied and adjusted our sailing plans based on weather reports, ready for whatever challenges might arise.

Learning to Harness the Power of Nature

Throughout this leg of the journey, Josh spent considerable time experimenting with the Hydran settings and steering abilities in various sea conditions. Through trial and error, we began to master the balance between utilizing wind power while still maintaining control over Nandji 2. Despite minor hiccups along the way, such as issues with water leakage from our cockpit cover, we persevered through the strong winds and rainy weather with a renewed sense of purpose – harnessing the strength of nature to make our dream voyage possible.
As the crew continues their 600 nautical mile sail across the wild Indian Ocean, join us for future episodes as they navigate the unpredictable waters ahead.
In this episode we navigate the challenging waters of West Sumatra as we sail from Sabang to Palau Raya. We have it all with strong squalls, strong currents and moments of no wind at all. Before setting off we had engine issues.. will the come back to haunt us?
