Learning what NOT to tinker with on our sailboat - Ep 187

We sail to two last favourite spots in the beautiful British Virigin Islands before sailing to the US Virgin Islands, Spanish Virgin Islands of Puerto Rico and along the northern coast of Puerto Rico into the San Juan inlet. We encounter big seas, even bigger neighbours, witness a sailboat dragging and break down our provisioning process as we prepare for 3 months in the Bahamas. We learn what happens when one becomes a bit too handy and we encounter issues with the freezer thermostat, just as we are provisioning and stocking up food for 3 months in the Bahamas.

Provisioning a Sailboat in Puerto Rico – Episode Breakdown

Welcome back to Sailing Gypsy, where we are all about that sailboat life! In this riveting episode, hosts Travis and Stephanie take you through the thrilling process of provisioning their vessel for an upcoming adventure in the beautiful Bahamas. This journey starts in Puerto Rico, a favorite cruising destination, but with a twist – there’s plenty to consider before embarking.

Strategic Grocery Shopping

The couple begins their provisioning process with the strategic acquisition of essential non-perishable and perishable goods. The goal is to ensure a supply that lasts at least three months, a daunting task made manageable by meticulous planning and careful selection at the local grocery store. They emphasize the need for uht milk, cereals, sauces, canned items, seasonings, and even pasta, showcasing a blend of comfort foods and essential supplies.

Challenges Encountered

The adventure is not without its challenges. They encounter unexpected obstacles, including a sailboat adrift in the busy Port of Puerto Rico and needing to secure assistance from the Coast Guard for safe resolution. Additionally, issues with their freezer’s thermostat lead to delays in completing their provisioning, highlighting the importance of careful planning and preparation.

Provisioning Strategy

Their provisioning strategy includes breaking down larger packages into more manageable sizes for easier storage and longer shelf life. The hosts demonstrate an excellent understanding of the necessity to conserve space while ensuring they have enough food for their voyage. This process involves a bit of trial and error, showing the reality of cruising life where problems can arise unexpectedly.

Navigating Unforeseen Obstacles

Throughout this episode, Travis and Stephanie adeptly handle unforeseen obstacles such as weather windows and the need to source parts like a new thermostat. This showcases their resilience and adaptability required for long-term sailing adventures.

The Journey Ahead

With provisioning completed, albeit with some delays due to unforeseen issues, the couple is now prepared to set sail towards the Bahamas. This leg of their journey promises excitement and adventure as they navigate both the waters and logistics of a three-month sailing expedition. The final preparations involve unpacking pasta carefully, fitting in amongst all their supplies, and securing everything before their big departure.
