460 NAUTICAL MILES TO PARADISE! - Ep 188

Join us, Steph and Travis Canadian sailors who cut the dock lines 3 years ago from Toronto Ontario. We've recently crossed back from Europe and have been long awaiting this very moment. Dropping anchor in the unmatched pristine Bahamian blue waters we've so longed to return to!

We depart from San Juan, Puerto Rico embarking on a 3 day offshore sail to Great Inagua in the Bahamas. Along the way, we encounter unforeseen wind changes, hoist our asymmetrical spinnaker sail, prepare meals underway in the galley and throw the trolling line out to test our luck with some fishing!

460 NAUTICAL MILES TO PARADISE!

After provisioning and prepping, we set sail from Puerto Rico to the Bahamas on a highly anticipated 3-day offshore sail in our floating home. This is essentially why we sailed back across the Atlantic – it came out of nowhere.

Sailing from San Juan

With 460 nautical miles between us and Paradise, we made our way out of San Juan with some crispy chicken bacon Caesar, as Travis enjoyed his provisions. The initial challenge was dealing with the sea state in the Mona Passage which could still play an effect on how the waves split through these islands.

During this sail, Travis had to motor for 2 and a half hours but eventually, they got enough wind back to keep the sails somewhat full, allowing them to harness the power of nature. The boat covered 122 nautical miles in the first 24 hours. With only one sail flapping, it seemed like they were making good progress.

The Perfect Wind

Just when Travis had put off putting up the spinnaker for two hours, the wind finally picked up, filling the sails and creating smoother waves for a more enjoyable ride. They managed to navigate through big sea states coming from different directions as they were offshore from being in the center of it all.

As Jibsea approached the Dominican Republic with their spinnaker flying high behind them, Travis remarked that the sunset created a stunning effect against the yellow sail. At night, with wind speeds reaching upwards of 22 knots, they could finally fly through the water, achieving almost 8 knots over waves and should reach the Bahamas by midnight.

Catching Dinner

As the wind picked up to steady speeds of 20+ knots for the remaining journey to the Bahamas, Jibsea had the fortune of catching dinner while sailing at such impressive speeds. They caught a Dorado or Mahi-mahi fish just before reaching land, proving that their adventurous spirit pays off.

Arriving in Paradise

A week after setting sail from Puerto Rico, Jibsea finally arrives in the crystal-clear waters of the Bahamas. The blue water was unmatched with any other destination they had visited so far – a sight worth waking up to after an epic 3-day offshore journey. With all usual post-passage activities completed, it’s now time for the fun part: exploring this paradise and going spearfishing in the most unreal waters ever sailed through.

And that’s what Jibsea is known for – chasing tropical paradise while navigating open oceans and conquering adventures along the way. For more exciting episodes of Sailing Jibsea, subscribe to their channel today!
