Life aboard our sailboat Isabella slows down while we deal with a stubborn exhaust leak—one of those boat repairs that always seems to take longer than expected. Boat life often means custom parts, patience, and learning to enjoy the pause. While docked, we try a little fishing with our new two-piece rod and trusty Penn Senator reel, joking about landing a 500-pound bluefin tuna. With shrimp for bait and optimism in the air, Karen promises a celebration if Steve catches a fish… though she won’t say what kind.
As the new year gets underway, Karen finally removes the Christmas lights from Isabella, and we take time to reflect on both our eventful and peaceful sailing adventures. Steve even sings a few bars of “Good Morning Starshine”—don’t worry, music producers, no competition here.
After roughly 1,500 nautical miles of sailing, we’ve learned that cruising has plenty of highs and lows. Long days and nights under sail can be exhausting, but there’s something uniquely rewarding about the cruising lifestyle. Our journeys have taken us through the Florida Keys, Cape Canaveral, Savannah, Brunswick, Jacksonville, Stuart, West Palm Beach, and beyond. And yes—we’re convinced Fort Lauderdale is jinxed for us.
If you enjoy real-life sailboat cruising, honest boat repairs, fishing attempts, and the ups and downs of life aboard, welcome to Sailing Intermission.
