The Sailing Intermission crew recently embarked on a transformative project to revamp their Catalina 42 sailboat, sharing the process, challenges, and joy of creating an AFT Companion Way hatch Sunbrella cover. This makeover journey reveals how living on a boat changed their lives, and highlights essential maintenance tips and updates for any boating enthusiast.
The Sailing Intermission crew reminisced about their past boats, like the Catalina 42 that they still have fond memories of. The crew also mentioned how their life had changed since then; no longer just cruising on a beautiful boat but now having children and living full-time on a sailboat.
In an effort to keep their boat in the best condition possible, the Sailing Intermission crew decided to make a custom AFT Companion Way hatch Sunbrella cover. They started by gathering all the necessary tools and materials, including their trusty mid-1960s singer sewing machine (model number 237) that they purchased for just $10.
The crew admitted they were not professional sewers, but the journey was about learning, bonding, and making improvements to their home on the water. The hatch cover project turned out to be a great way to learn new skills while adding functionality and style to their boat.
Sailing Intermission shares stories of the challenges they faced adapting to living full-time aboard their sailboat, including learning new skills, working together as parents, and overcoming unforeseen issues. Despite the difficulties, they wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.
In a stroke of luck, Sailing Intermission got their hands on tide minders – essential balls used in fixed docks to keep lines tight and reduce stress on boat components. They eagerly snatched these up from a friend’s boat with excitement as they could enhance their boat’s functionality.
Embracing changes and focusing on learning new things has helped Sailing Intermission adapt to their boating lifestyle. From taking care of necessary maintenance tasks like sewing boat covers to navigating life’s unexpected obstacles, this couple is enjoying a beautiful sail across the sea.
In our quest for adventure and freedom on the water, we’re always looking to learn and grow – both literally and figuratively. Life moves at its own pace when living aboard a sailboat!
Sewing, tideminders, funnel clouds, hatch cover, lights, dancing, threesome
Steve whips out and lubricates the Singer 237 to sew a cover for the aft campionway hatch. It’s a super heavy duty sewing machine and ours was built in 1957. We added an extra light in the salon and now there are three in the ceiling. Karen changes the water filter.
Our dock mate is selling his boat and offered us his tideminders. We dinghied over to his former slip to retrieve them. Tideminders are balls you put dock lines through to allow the lines to ride up and down the piling as the tide levels change. It makes being in a fixed dock kind of like having a floating dock.
While Steve was changing the battery of the Haybusa motorcycle, Karen noticed a couple of nearby funnel clouds. A little scary and we’re not sure if they touched down over water to become waterspouts. Just happy they didn’t come our way.
