Vaporized in a BLINK: The Tragic Story of Sailing in St Pierre
The idyllic French Island of St. Pierre, once known for its vibrant town and bustling harbor, is a haunting reminder of the devastating power of nature. A catastrophic volcanic eruption in 1902 turned this charming town into a ghostly remnant of its former self.
In May of 1902, Mount Pelée spewed an enormous plume of ash and smoke into the sky, hiding the truth from the unsuspecting residents below. As the deadly gas pyroclastic flow surged forward at over 200 mph, it incinerated everything in its path. St Pierre’s entire harbor was wiped out instantly.
Tragic Loss of Life
The aftermath revealed the unthinkable consequences – 30,000 souls had been claimed by the eruption. Only a handful of survivors were found among the ruins, making it one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions in history.
Memorial de la Catastrophe
Today, scattered remnants across the island provide haunting glimpses into the past. Visitors can tour the Memorial de la Catastrophe museum to learn more about this tragic event through exhibits and artifacts.
Gourmet Food Paradise
Despite its somber history, St Pierre remains an enticing destination for sailors seeking top-notch culinary experiences. Josh and Sunny marveled at the local French cuisine, particularly a delectable chicken dish reminiscent of Thanksgiving dinner.
In this episode, you’ll join them as they explore haunting ruins, enjoy breathtaking views, and relish delicious local food. Get ready for a unique journey filled with both history and gastronomic delights!
We all know that the majority of these islands were created by volcanos. But you forget the fact that they can be hibernating and not dead. They are all in a different state of activity and sometimes the top just blows, and everything can be gone before your brain can even register it.
This week we step back in time to 1902 when Mt. Pele erupted in St. Pierre, Martinique. It was fantastic to see how the town has been rebuilt and thriving and how they kept the remnants of the past alive in their architecture and heritage sites.
