Diving into the Culture of the Azores
February 28, 2025 by Sailing Honu Time | Language: EN Play Time: 00:23:15 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

We have been couped up on this ocean for 14 days now and it’s time to blow off some steam. But maybe we went a bit overboard by jumping into a local cultural event of running with the bulls. 😲🐂
To be honest we didn’t even know the Azores existed until we began this journey. They are a group of 9 islands that is an archipelago of Portugal and filled with the most amazing history. This week we had the awesome pleasure of traveling to two of the islands Faial and Terceira.
Faial is known for its unique landscape. Hydrangeas, line the roadsides and fields in vibrant blue beauty like a blanket of crystal blue water on land. Aside from its dramatic flora everywhere you look is the contrast of the rugged volcanic landscape. Faial is home to the iconic Capelinhos Volcano which decimated an entire town in 1957 and is now slowly eroding the ash and debris away to uncover the trapped city below. It was super eerie to hake on this land and know that there were houses just below our feet.
Terceria was chalked with so much history and culture. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its Renaissance architecture and rich cultural heritage. To walk these streets, it felt like being transported back in time to the 1800’s. Being emersed in all this amazing history, taking in every bit of it we could, brought us smack dab into another ancestral pastime on this island. Bullfighting. We had the crazy pleasure of partaking in typical rope bullfights. This means bull runs through the streets of the town, held by a long rope held by a group of men known as the shepherds.
Now I’m going to tell you that even though you know the bull is somewhat contained by the shepherds with that massive rope you still hear your heart pounding between your ears and run like hell when that bad boy comes running your way. What an adventure!
⛵ We made it to the Azores 😁
