Gibraltar is our last stop in the Mediterranean and the jump-off point for the passage south to the Canaries. We sail in and anchor in the bay off La Línea, which gives us a great view of the Rock — even when morning fog rolls in and most of it disappears.
Then the engine refuses to start. We suspect the starter battery has finally given up, and we’re lucky we can just drop into Gibraltar for a replacement. We take Helios into Queensway Marina to reset the VAT clock and get ready for the passage south, then join a guided tour up the Rock.
The tunnels from the Great Siege and WWII are genuinely impressive, and once you’re inside them it’s easy to see why this piece of rock has been such a major military asset for centuries.
