In this episode of Sailing Gargoyle, join the crew as they embark on an adventure to the city of Ragusa in Sicily. As the wind whips through their marina home, they find themselves confined to waiting out the storm while discovering the magic that is Ragusa.
With a rich history dating back to 2000 BC, the ancient city located on a high hill has experienced interactions with civilizations such as Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs. In 848 AD, the Arabs maintained control for several centuries.
Unable to sail in such windy conditions, the crew takes a bus into Ragusa with limited direction and only one goal – finding SIM cards. As they navigate through the narrow streets of this ancient city, they witness stunning architecture that reflects its rich history.
Following a chance encounter with a helpful local who assists them in finding their way, the crew heads to Giardino IA – a vast park at the end of Ragusa. The love for parks by both the couple and Kevin is evident as they decide to walk all the way down to the gardens.
At Giardino IA, they find a breathtaking view of the valley with beautiful churches scattered around the park. A central Basin is surrounded by lovely flower beds while a special Grove of Remembrance houses a monument dedicated to those who fell during World War I.
After spending a few delightful hours exploring, the crew returns to Marina de Ragusa with renewed determination. Despite the wind continuing its strong blow, they’re grateful for the shelter offered by the marina and are eagerly awaiting their next opportunity to set sail towards Mainland Italy.
For the crew, their adventure in Ragusa leads to many more memories, and they are keen on learning from these experiences. Despite being stranded by bad weather conditions, this episode brings out not only their resilience but also a sense of adventure that’s characteristic of their journey around the globe.
Ragusa, the magnificent city in the south of Sicily has been a feature here for over 4,000 years. This week we are off to escape the winds that are howling through our marina and look to tour Ragusa. The food, history, gardens, churches and oh yes, the steps, await us. Come along as we take a bus from our marina to the magnificent walled city on the hill. Ragusa!
