This week we finish off our canal transit back to the Pacific with a surprisingly relaxing day. After a tortuous night on an oversized mooring in Lake Gatun, our canal advisor arrives bright and early for our long run through the lake and down the Pacific side. Along the way to the first of the western locks, we get a personally guided tour of the canal’s history from both our advisor as well as our seasoned line handlers. As the first boat to transit the canal westbound that day, we had assumed a quick exit from the canal but that proved incorrect. In another case of hurry up and wait, we find ourselves quickly outpacing our commercial lock buddy and we end up waiting for three hours tied up at the front of the first lock. We use this time to learn about the canal and its unique history, but this day turns into a marathon as we finally drop our canal advisor around 5:00PM. Anchor down in Las Brisas anchorage with the lights of Panama City an hour later and we are one tired but happy sailing couple.
