Stranded with mechanical issues with bad weather coming!

We sail from The exumas to the Eluthera Islands in the Bahamas in our Sear 340 sundancer but we meet some trouble along the way. Our starboard engine won't make full power. It was a fuel related issue but we weren't sure what exactly thr problem was!

Join Sailing Doodles as they set sail from Emerald Bay Marina down in Great Exuma, Bahamas for an epic voyage up the stunning Exuma Island chain (starting at 1:13). With high hopes and excitement in the air, the duo prepares to embark on their adventure after securing fuel at the marina.

Their journey begins smoothly, navigating through the first 50 miles with relative ease, though they face challenges early on as they pass through shallow waters near Staniel Cay. It’s just a taste of what’s to come as they press onward towards their next destination at Laura Bay (4:53).

Little did the duo know that mechanical issues lay in wait for them, threatening to derail their entire trip. Just after setting sail from Staniel Cay with plans to reach Laura Bay, they suddenly discover that their starboard engine isn’t performing at optimal power levels and begins rolling back RPMs (10:43). Something’s definitely not right.

Troubleshooting and Persistence

Using their knowledge and skills, the crew attempts to diagnose the issue. A call to their mechanic leads them down a path of suspecting water or contaminants in the fuel filter at the starboard engine (13:25). They then drop anchor near Staniel Cay and start work on removing and replacing the problematic fuel filter.

The Problem Solved?

With some uncertainty, they continue their journey with hopes that the new fuel filter would fix their engine’s power problem. Initially met with a sense of relief after observing signs that the issue had improved, they persevered through a nerve-wracking situation until eventually reaching Cape Alar (27:00).

A Safe Haven Found

In the nick of time, just as a storm threatened to wreak havoc on their plans, they managed to secure a much-needed docking spot at Cape Alar. A place often filled with its own set of problems and challenges, but those obstacles are what make each journey unique and memorable.

Exhale and Reflect

It’s during these challenging moments on the sea that you truly appreciate a safe haven. After arriving at Cape Alar, they indulge in a hearty meal to celebrate their success. The sense of relief and joy on their faces is priceless as they marvel in the fact that they made it just in time before more inclement weather hit (34:15).

Reflection

This vlog showcases a great lesson on how important it is to face adversity with resilience, determination and persistence. Sometimes things go wrong on an adventure, but that’s what makes the experience truly memorable. When you overcome these challenges, the sense of accomplishment is unparalleled (36:45).
