Sailing Dark Angel: A Voyage from White Bay Key to Georgetown

In this riveting episode, Sailing Dark Angel embarks on a memorable adventure, sailing their vessel from the serene shores of White Bay Key towards the captivating waters of Georgetown in the Bahamas. Alongside them, viewers will experience an exhilarating voyage filled with challenges and triumphant moments.

A Patched-up Engine and a Voyage Ahead

The journey commences as Dark Angel’s team tends to their patched-up engine. Despite the damage, they ensure everything is functioning properly, taping potential holes in hoses and topping up coolant levels. The loss of one solar controller significantly impacts their power generation, necessitating creative solutions for essential boat operations like using a winch. These technical issues add an extra layer of excitement to the sailing journey.

Navigating the Exuma Cuts

With White Bay Key in their rearview mirror, Dark Angel sails down the Exuma chain, aiming for Elizabeth Harbor and Georgetown. Their destination is Lee Stocking Island, where they decide to venture on foot to Monument Beach’s historic landmark for the first time. The team discusses various cut options through the narrow passes of the Exumas, weighing risks against rewards based on wind speed and wave heights. They opt for Glass Cay Cut, mindful of standing waves and choppy waters.

A Challenging Anchor Lift

Viewers witness a change in the team’s leaving process, as they no longer have their windlass connected due to the blown-out solar controller. Instead, the crew relies on brute force and determination to haul up their 38-chain mantis anchor. Captain Dave navigates Dark Angel while describing the challenges of lifting such a heavy anchor without traditional equipment, showcasing their resilience in the face of adversity.

The Journey to Georgetown

Their journey leads them 15-20 miles southward towards Georgetown. The team anticipates a roughly five-to-six-hour sail under favorable conditions, aiming for Honeymoon Beach upon arrival. Known for its well-protected shallows, this location has room enough for Dark Angel amidst the many masts surrounding it. After discussing the challenges of their current Anchorage’s consistent rolling motion, they look forward to calmer waters ahead.

A Hike Up Monument Beach

Upon reaching Georgetown, Dark Angel eagerly disembarks for an adventure up Monument Beach. Despite potential wind gusts and unclear tidal conditions, the team embarks on this excursion armed with tunes, water, a blanket, cameras, and good spirits. Dave jokes about carrying more than his fair share of the supplies, while Captain Dave navigates using their trusted map and compass. Their climb leads to breathtaking panoramic views, showing a side of Georgetown few get to experience. They discuss construction work happening in the area, noting a new beachfront restaurant being added alongside Chatt’n Shell’s already popular establishment. The adventure culminates with meeting fellow cruisers from Arizona at the top, who share their own stories of Portaging their yacht across deserts before reaching the sea.

Conclusion

Dark Angel’s voyage to Georgetown proves an unforgettable adventure filled with trials and rewards. By fixing a patched-up engine, navigating through treacherous Exuma Cuts, hiking Monument Beach, and meeting fellow cruisers, they not only survive but thrive amidst these challenges. Their journey underscores the allure of sailing in unfamiliar waters, facing the unknown with courage, and emerging richer for it. For anyone fascinated by the sea and its mysteries, Sailing Dark Angel’s tale is a testament to resilience, adventure, and an unyielding love for life on the waves.
