Meganisi #1 beach, Nidri waterfall hike & choosing the right marine engineer takes you on a full week of adventure training, boat admin, and serious mechanical challenges aboard our Fountain Pajot Astrea 42 catamaran in Greece.
We kick things off with a brutal 4km waterfall hike up a hill in Nidri, Lefkada—the ultimate “free calories” adventure training session to get fit while exploring the Ionian. Then, we head to the chandlery in Nidri to buy 16mm floating stern tie rope, preventing the nightmare of lines getting sucked into our prop again (a lesson learned after cutting rope with rope cutters!).
The big mechanical drama: After weeks waiting for a generator PCB from Athens, we finally fit it and discover the engine is seized or the coupling bearing is corroded. The generator won’t turn. This means we need a crane to lift the generator off the boat, strip it down, and fix it. We relocate to Vathí, Meganisi to charge our 30% lithium batteries, refill water and fuel tanks, and grab a swim at Meganisi’s stunning #1 beach.
Back in Vilco Bay, thanks to Sale Ionian charter company for lending us their concrete pontoon, mechanic MarioS (26 years old) disconnects the generator, and crane operator Costas prepares to lift it out. Plus, new rigid solar panels arrive just as the generator comes off—killing two birds with one stone!
