We have not one but two birthdays this week on our little blue water sailing boat. We get ready to start a mountain of boat chores as soon as the celebrations are over, we meet several of our neighbours in the marina plus we go and explore some of this amazing Scottish coastline.

OUR INSPIRATION

A big shout out to some of the people who inspired us to live a life less ordinary, and for any family or friends who wonder who gave us this crazy idea, well there are several parties to blame, which I’ll list below.

Firstly the original sailing couple who led the way for so many of the sailing channels that we see today, none other than Paul and Sheryl Shard and their Distant Shores adventure channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/distants…

Second on the list has to go to possibly my favourite channel to watch, I hope to one day be even 10% as capable of fixing boat problems that arise as Captain Brian over at the Delos channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/briantra…

Also a big shout out to the amazingly talented and beautiful couple over at Sailing La Vagabond. You guys made us realise that buying and living on a sailing boat was possible for us mere mortals, even if you have transcended that status somewhat by now. Great channel for anyone that’s never come across them: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZdQ…

Finally to a modern day Moitessier, documenting his mostly single handed sails in his tiny little boat, really capturing the entire range of what the ocean can throw at you, all the while remaining calm, collected and just getting on with it. If we can keep our cool even half as well as this legend then we will be fine. The Sailing Frenchman: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjbnS2PJDbVxyF0foCil6oQ

We Almost Threw These Away… Now Look

We almost didn’t bother with these. Late in the season, we collected a handful of fallen acorns from the forest floor—fully expecting most of them to fail. Everything we’d read (and been told) suggested they wouldn’t sprout this late. So we nearl...

Could We Actually Live Like This?

We headed into our woodland to cook a proper Dutch oven pizza over the fire… but this trip turned into something a bit more special. It was Hudson’s 2nd birthday, so we decided to celebrate it the only way that makes sense for us — deep in the fores...

I Nearly Lost My Finger | Some Good News, Some Bad

This week I had a close call with a log splitter and nearly lost my finger while working in our woodland. I’ll show the injury later in the video for those who are morbidly curious. After that scare, the week took an unexpected turn. My wife found an a...

We Bought a Woodland – Ep2 – A Problem in the Woods

We bought a woodland, and this is episode two. Lately my dad has been struggling, and sometimes the only thing you can do is show up and try to make life a little easier in the ways you know how. This day in the woods wasn’t about fixing everything or ...

Carly Had a Great Idea… and It Might Actually Work

This video started with a simple idea from Carly — using what we already have around us in the woodland to create something genuinely useful. We won’t say what it is at the start, because half the fun was working it out as we went along… but by the ...
