This is, without a doubt, the easiest way to solder wires on your boat [Solder Sleeves]. Subscribe to our Channel, it’s FREE! 🔔 ➜ http://bit.ly/SBYouTube⛵

Boat wiring just got ridiculously easy… Despite me working offshore with ROVs, where soldering is a regular occurrence, I only discovered solder sleeves fairly recently.

Most people I have worked with offshore solder in pairs. First the wires are ‘tinned’, then one guy holds the wires in position, with the heat-shrink pre-installed and held out of the way of the joint, while the other guy holds the solder and uses the soldering iron.

Working with short cable lengths, which need to be kept tidy so that they can be potted for subsea use, the above operation often results in burnt fingers (mostly ignored in a manly fashion, sometimes accompanied by bad language and a hand-shaking jazz-dance, followed by a laugh from both parties.)

Both guys also get to breathe in soldering fumes, which are supposedly carcinegenic…

For years I have avoided some of the above problems by using the spring on the the soldering iron holder (or my legs depending on the situation) as a “helping hand” type device, holding the iron, which gives me two free hands to solder alone.

This is how I would solder on the boat too, until I discovered solder sleeves!

Now joining two wires can done with one hand, there are no fumes and you don’t even need a soldering iron to join two wires together.

The finished job is airtight, watertight (up to a point), mechanically strong and electrically perfect – and from a dimensional perspective, there is more meat on a vegan yoga teacher’s pencil, which means you can fit about 1,000 wires through a small orifice (running cables is often a pain in the derriere on boats – thin cables are much easier to work with and don’t get stuck as often).

What more could you ask for?! A complete kit of these won’t set you back much more than a roll of flux-core solder. That’s a bargain if you ask me!

Before anyone brings up something these can’t be used for… No, it won’t be replacing my soldering iron and the old-school techniques which have served me well for years, but it is a wonderful addition to any boat’s tool kit. I would choose this over standard soldering any time!

Thanks for watching! Buy yourself some solder sleeves and share this video with your mates. Cheers! 👍
