We Almost Left Tahiti… I’m Glad We Stayed

We were almost ready to leave Tahiti when our friends on SV Palarran pulled into the anchorage—and suddenly, we had a very good reason to stay.

Cruising friendships are unpredictable. You never really know when your paths will cross again, so when the kids’ friends showed up, we changed our plans and stayed a little longer.

With an unexpected extra few days in Tahiti, we rented a car and finally explored beyond Papeete and Marina Taina—visiting Arahurahu Marae, the Grottes de Maraa, the Water Gardens of Vaipahi, giant Tahitian freshwater eels, and Teahupoʻo, the legendary surf village at the End of the Road.

Then it was back to regular boat life: rain, groceries, and a very wet dinghy ride.

But our friends on SV Palarran had one more surprise to share. On their way into Tahiti, they encountered humpback whales just outside the reef—and soon we’ll be heading out to hopefully experience them for ourselves.

This Is What We Stayed in Tahiti For

We almost left Tahiti, but changing our plans gave us something we didn’t realize we needed — a little more time with friends. Cruising friendships can be short. Boats arrive, plans change, and eventually everyone sails in different directions. So sometimes a few extra days together are worth stayi...

Childhood Looks a Little Different Out Here

School. Chores. Sibling antics. Video games. And then there’s handling the dinghy, climbing the mast, and learning to take care of each other. They’re still just kids. They’re just growing up a little differently. We chose this sailing life because we wanted more time together—and watching our ki...

When Did This Stop Feeling Unusual?

At some point, the unusual became our everyday life. Laundry on the lifelines. Dinghy rides for errands. Homeschool wherever we happen to be. Kids growing up on the water. When we left Idaho, none of this felt normal. Now it’s simply life aboard Big Lost. What’s something in your life that once f...

We Wanted a Different Life… This Is Where It Took Us

We left Idaho looking for a different life. We had no idea that decision would eventually take our family across the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, across the Pacific Ocean and all the way to French Polynesia. This week, the weather kept us sitting still in Tahiti—and for once, that gave us a...
