Downwind sailing in Baja California has its charm, with clear skies above, whales breaching close to the vessel and crystal waters reflecting nature’s glory all around. It’s like an effortless glide through breathtaking vistas – almost too good to be true!
Aqua Verde, with its nutrient-rich waters home to a myriad of fish species and marine life like dolphins, whales, sharks, and rays is indeed an aquatic paradise. As part of their journey around the bay, they decide on a leisurely jig ride exploring beyond the shore’s edge where most would only dare venture if in company.
For this journey, a head sail on a pole proves to be not only relaxing but an easier sailing experience. A conversation about their spinnaker (head sail) brings into focus how they haven’t used it much until now; however, its debut turned out fantastic. Despite initial teething troubles, like it shutting off mid-use or needing to turn it on and off repeatedly, the benefits of less noise, improved speed and a more comfortable sailing experience far outweighed these minor inconveniences.
Their initial plan was to explore a new Anchorage today. But given their shared experiences with several anchorages along this coast, they decide to follow their buddy boat’s lead, considering their own tolerance for rolly waters and comfort level with the sea. They share an amusing moment about how each vessel handles roll differently – a testament perhaps, to each boat owner’s unique adaptation to ocean swells.
While they may be leaving familiar grounds soon, they can’t deny the allure of Aqua Verde. From the vibrant community life and fresh seafood in local markets to breathtaking views that rejuvenate the soul – these are memories worth cherishing.
Running into friends unexpectedly in their otherwise solitary journey, adds a unique charm to the adventure. Conversations range from downwind sailing tactics and personal navigation challenges to shared health concerns, such as battling mild sea sickness caused by overindulgence or exposure to an unknown contagious ailment.
In the spirit of camaraderie, one sailor challenges another with a lighthearted handicap race while sailing downwind. Even though they’ve been out on their journey for two and a half years now, experiences like these highlight the inherent fun that life at sea holds.
Over conversations about staying healthy amidst unpredictable conditions at sea, there’s also a hint of introspection. One talks about separating oneself from their head and body while considering the existence of a ‘third person’. The concept sparks off discussions about self-awareness and understanding one’s own psyche – adding another layer to this simple yet profound journey.
With the decision made to return to familiar territory, they head back retracing their path through channels that hold many stories. Their adventures don’t end here – there’s always another wave to catch and a horizon to explore.
The essence of their journey in Baja California lies not just in sailing downwind with a head sail, exploring anchorages, sighting whales, or even the camaraderie aboard friend’s vessels but also about introspection and cherishing the simple joys of life.
If this journey sparks an interest in exploring more, we encourage you to embark on your own. Remember, the world is your oyster and there are endless adventures waiting for you just over the horizon. Don’t be lazy like that sailboat!
We sail to the beautiful town of Agua Verde, in the Sea of Cortez. After exploring the local sights for a couple days we set sail to destinations south. We enjoy a peaceful downwind sail, and manage to pole out our headsail for the first time. It was sailing bliss as we cruised to our next anchorage
We hope our video inspires you to explore the world on your own sailboat!
