Sailing the turquoise waters of the Maldives is always an adventure—but this journey became truly unforgettable when our steering system failed, leaving us to navigate using only our emergency tiller. What could have been a setback turned into a unique family experience, as we slowly sailed between idyllic atolls, adapting to a simpler, more hands-on way of life while waiting for essential spare parts to arrive.
Despite the challenge, we embraced every moment. One of the highlights of our time was celebrating Yewan’s birthday in the most extraordinary way—snorkelling over a mysterious shipwreck, a vessel with a history as layered as the ocean itself, having changed names several times over the years. Gliding above its remains in crystal-clear waters made for a birthday none of us will ever forget.
We discovered a charming spot to enjoy pizza, and explored small local shops in search of supplies. Reprovisioning became an adventure of its own, as we sourced fresh produce from a nearby farm and made do with what was available, learning to be resourceful along the way.
When the long-awaited spare parts finally arrived, it marked a turning point in our journey. Together as a family, we worked side by side to repair the steering system, transforming a technical challenge into a shared achievement. With everything back in working order, we completed our final preparations—refilling our water tanks, refuelling, and getting ready for the next leg of our voyage.
This experience of sailing around the Maldives with an emergency tiller wasn’t just about overcoming obstacles—it was about resilience, family teamwork, and discovering the beauty of slowing down in one of the world’s most breathtaking destinations.
