Somewhere in the open water between the Maldives and Socotra, our passage took a turn we never saw coming — literally. We ran into a sprawling network of drift nets, all interconnected, stretching for miles with no clear way through. They barely showed up on AIS until we were within a few miles of them, giving us almost no warning to plan a route around.
Our buddy boat had it even worse — their AIS didn't pick up the nets at all, and they ended up snagged in the dark. That meant someone had to go over the side at night, diving under the hull to cut them free while the rest of us stood watch, scanning the water and the horizon for what else might be out there.
This video covers the whole ordeal: the moment we first spotted the nets, the tense hours trying to navigate around a maze we couldn't fully see, the radio calls back and forth with our buddy boat once they got caught, and the long, sleepless night that followed as we kept watch until sunrise.
