What happens when you think your boat is sinking ? It is difficult not to panic when you see water rapidly filling up and rising above the floor boards and all the things in the bilge are floating.
This is what happened on a short passage we did of about 15nm, one of those passages when you think there is not enough time for anything to go wrong.
When we first noticed the amount of water in the boat, it was quite a shock and our first reaction was to bail it out as fast as we could which was not fast enough.
After checking the bow thruster, sea cocks, keel and then tasting the water, we realised it was actually fresh water and must be coming from a burst pipe.
Unfortunately this pipe did not seem accessible at first and we thought we would have to cut a hole in the floor .
Luckily, we found an access hatch and were able to repair the burst pipe without causing any extra damage.
At the end of all the ‘drama’, we were even able to enjoy the cool beach at the entrance to Spanish waters in Curaçao.
